Small Business Franchise

Are Small Business Franchises Right For You?

Business owners who are interested in franchise opportunities often overlook small franchises in the market. Most of the franchise seekers go to large, established franchise models. Large franchises are definitely lucrative because they have established business models, good training and great support systems in place etc although they have a disadvantage that they require heavy investments before being able to be part of the franchise operation.
Many a businessman has been disappointed with the eligibility requirements of a large franchise operation as it will simply not be possible for an individual with limited resources to meet the eligibility requirements.
However, there are opportunities for people with little assets in the shape of small franchises.
There are many small business franchises in the country and one can quickly search for them through the Internet or newspaper ads. However, one the things to take into consideration when exploring small franchises is the existence of a great many scams.
But, small franchises that are scams can often be detected very easily as they will involve themselves in cheap advertisements promising huge amounts of money in very short intervals.
Another obvious red flag that unethical small business franchises are known for are that they will not have any proper contact information. If there is no physical address or a phone number to verify the franchise operation, you can assume that it is very likely to be a scam.

Here are the pro's and con's of small franchises on a general basis.

Pro's

  • A small business franchise will have a more direct system where you will have the opportunity to talk to important people in the company on a personal basis. This will allow you to better understand the business model better and feel more in touch with the parent company. A small franchise may allow the possibility of offering you a personal helping hand in running your business.
  • A small franchise will also be more flexible with their business operation. Large franchise operations can be very frustrating about operating policies and will want them exercised at all costs, even if it does not make any practical sense to how you would like to run the business. However, small franchise operations will be flexible and willing to change their policies to suit your particular business model.
  • A small franchise operation will also take in suggestions from you and you can contribute to the company’s development by making potential improvements to the franchise model.

Con's

  • A small franchise business model will usually have a very restricted budget that will limit the amount of resources made available to you.
  • For example, you will find that the amount of training provided to you will be less than optimal as the franchise cannot spend a lot of money in hiring third party trainers.
  • Their technology support will also often lack behind the current trend in the market as they often try to make do with cheaper technology.
  • The biggest risk to small franchises is that their business model might not be as strong as a large franchise. This will mean that you will have to take on some degree of risk if you are intending to become involved with such a small business franchise.
