Do You Need A Franchise Consultant?

What are franchise consultants? They are the middle man between the franchisee and the franchisor. They provide free advice to franchisees but once they have connected them to the franchisor and they sign up, they get a commission from the franchisor.


 

These consultants are experts and knowledgeable on available franchises and they have the capability of matching would-be franchisees to these businesses. Some of these may not have been in the business for a long time but they are provided short trainings by franchise consulting agencies. Some of them may also have ties with certain businesses.

It can be a double-sided blade if you ask me. Let us try and break down the pros and cons of using franchise consultants:.

Pro: They know everything there is to know about the franchises and you will therefore not have to spend too much time researching about these businesses. They have all the information when it comes to the requirements and up to the available opportunities such as existing franchises for sale or building a new one from the ground up.

Con: Because they already know everything about the franchises, they may pressure you and you would not have time to really think about it. You may tend to just agree with what they say and forget to look into other details besides what was discussed in your interview.

Pro: They provide free consulting. Why would you refuse something that is free and can help you with your decision? You will require less research and therefore save time. Without having to spend a penny, you would have all the information you need in one stop.

Con: They provide you free consulting but they get a commission from the franchisor. How sure are you that they will not be favouring certain franchisors over others based upon their commission alone? It is stated that they have partnerships with certain businesses. What if there was something out there that fits your better but the franchise consultant is not affiliated with?

Pro: They spend time getting to know you and researching you, and that is how they make sure that they match you with the best franchisor they know. They are trained to find out your financial status, your previous experiences, and even your family details and they base their recommendations on what you tell them. They know what the franchisor is looking for as well and that helps eliminate unwanted connections and rejections which will waste a lot of your and the franchisors time.

Con: Would you not know yourself better to find a business that will work best for you? Why would you spend so much time explaining to someone else what you want and who you are when you can decide for yourself on what you really need without having to divulge all these private information to them.

There are a lot of consulting agencies and the best bet you have may be to scout for the best ones with the best reputation to assure yourself that you are getting the chosen franchise consultants  to help you and not just the franchisors and themselves.
